Acquisitions Policy

Introduction

The Greek-American Immigrants Archive, established in 2021, houses collections of Greek-American immigrant families all over the US. Archival materials, which include pictures, government records, household items, and more, aim to support research by scholars, students and the general public around the world. These materials can also be utilized for exhibitions and teaching resources.

Role of the Greek-American Immigrants Archives

The Greek-American Immigrants Archive is responsible for the selection, acquisition, digitization, online storage, exhibition, and use of published and unpublished materials, and also for the acquisition of archives created by and specifically related to Greek-American immigrants.

The Greek-American Immigrants Archive collects archival and historical materials that, by their contents and nature, provide unique insight into Greek immigrants’ lives in America from the 1900’s to the 1980’s.

Acquisition priorities for research collections

The Greek-American Immigrants Archive prioritizes the collection of materials related to family life, community life, work, and education of Greek individuals who migrated to the US (primarily but not exclusively related to the east coast) between 1900 and 1980.

Limitation of scope

When considering possible acquisitions, The Greek-American Immigrants Archive will take into consideration the following issues:

  • The authorized mandates of other archival institutions to avoid conflict of interest or overlap in acquisitions.
  • The physical condition of the materials and any costs associated with ensuring their physical stability and security during and after the digitization process.
  • Privacy and copyright restrictions.
  • The benefits of or drawbacks to investing the resources and time required to acquire, preserve and make available the materials in question.

Please note that The Greek-American Immigrants Archive cannot store your materials at a physical location. Upon digitization, materials will be returned to their owner and become available on the website.

The Greek-American Immigrants Archive will review its acquisition strategies annually and revise its services as required to make the most effective use of all resources available.
